Short Bio
Joe Bonamassa was born on May 8, 1977 in New Hartford, where his father owned a guitar business. He began playing the guitar at the age of four with a small Chiquita guitar. When he was twelve, he was already playing with B. B. King. At the age of 14 he was invited to accompany an event hosted by the musical instrument manufacturer Fender. During this journey on the West Coast he got to know Berry Oakley Jr., son of famous Allman Brothers. Bonamassa and Oakley, along with Erin Davis, son of Miles Davis, and Waylon Krieger, son of Robby Krieger, founded the band Bloodline, which released an album on EMI containing the two chart singles Stone Cold Hearted and Dixie Peach.
His first album ‘A New Day Yesterday’ was released in 2000 and produced by Tom Dowd. He played in a trio with Kenny Kramme on drums and Eric Czar on bass. After a concert tour promoting the album, Bonamassa and his fellow musicians returned to the studio in 2002 to record the album ‘So It’s Like’ that was produced by Clif Magness. The second album reached number one on the Billboard blues charts. During the tour, the demand for a traditional blues album grew larger and larger and the band released the next album named ‘Blues Deluxe’. The album contains nine cover versions of well-known Blues classics as well as three original songs written by Bonamassa. This album also reached number one on the Billboard blues charts.
Bonamassa’s album ‘Had to Cry Today’ released in 2004 goes back more towards the blues rock of Rory Gallagher who is a role-model for Bonamassa. However, it also contains elements of country and rockabilly genres. Bonamassa and his band toured again with B. B. King and Kenny Wayne Shepherd on the occasion of King’s eightieth birthday tour. In late 2005, just before the recordings for the album ‘You and Me’, Bonamassa separated from his bandmates, without specifying why he did this. For the recordings he hired numerous studio musicians like Jason Bonham on drums.
Among his favorite instruments was the model Les Paul by Gibson.
On March 10, 2012 Bonamassa got his first golden record for 100,000 sold DVDs of his concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Joe Bonamassa played alongside Steve Morse guitar on Jon Lord’s new recording of Concerto for Group and Orchestra, which was released on September 28, 2012.
In 2010, Bonamassa teamed with Glenn Hughes, Jason Bonham and Derek Sherinian to form the Black Country Communion group; they produced album Black Country Communion that was released on 16 September 2010. The album was released on 10 June 2011, the subsequent European tour was recorded on CD with Live Over Europe. The last studio album, ‘Afterglow’, was released on October 26, 2012. Bonamassa said in an interview with Premierguitar magazine in March 2013 that his involvement in Black Country Communion was over. He was happy that he was no longer involved and satisfied with what he had left behind with the three albums he had created with this collaboration. The band broke up shortly thereafter. In 2016, the band rejoined and produced the album BCCIV.
